November 8, 2013, Vienna, Austria. OFID Director-General Suleiman J Al-Herbish received a delegation from the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) to review the progress of on-going, OFID-financed operations and to strengthen future cooperation between the two organizations.
UNRWA’s delegation comprised Peter Ford, Representative of the UNRWA Commissioner-General, Robert Turner, Director of UNRWA Operations in Gaza and Maria Mohammedi, Donor Relations Coordinator. Meetings also took place between the delegation and OFID’s Head of Grant Unit Rachid Bencherif and Souhad Khriesat, Grants Officer to discuss matters of mutual interest.
Another meeting took place with the UNRWA and OFID Grants Unit representatives, as well as the Director of OFID’s Information Department, Mauro Hoyer, and Information Officer Reem Aljarbou and Karin Chacin, Protocol Officer, to discuss arrangements for an UNRWA and OFID co-hosted exhibition, entitled SPACE TIME DIGNITY RIGHTS. The exhibition, which has already been shown in Berlin and Bonn, Germany, Naples, Italy and Amman, Jordan, highlights conditions in Palestine for approximately 1.4 million refugees living in camps in the region. The exhibition will be held at OFID’s headquarters in Vienna, Austria, from January 28, 2014 as part of OFID's 38th anniversary celebrations.
OFID has supported UNRWA since 1979, when it extended a series of grants to finance the expansion, upgrading and modernization of seven of UNRWA’s vocational training center for Palestinian refugees, with activities covering the period of 1980-1987. Other grant assistance includes support for:
