The purpose of the project is to improve the water system of Rangoon, a city of more than 2 million inhabitants, having an annual population growth rate of 3.5%, by doubling the present capacity to meet projected demand up to 1989.
The project involves the construction of two earth dams at Pugy, 32 miles north of Rangoon. Two new pumping stations and a prestressed concrete pipes (PCP) line will carry the water from the reservoir to the city. The project is expected to have an internal rate of return of 7%. Indirect benefits include improved health standards as a result of a decrease in dependence on costly and unsafe sources of water supply and better control of the problem of groundwater salination.
