OPEC Fund contributes to WFP food security program in Syria

The OPEC Fund has signed a US$500,000 grant agreement with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to help meet urgent food needs in Syria as the country begins its recovery from more than 14 years of conflict.
This contribution will enable WFP to scale up emergency food assistance for 1.6 million people each month through electronic food vouchers redeemable at more than 300 local retailers, helping vulnerable families meet their basic needs while supporting local markets and livelihoods.
“Food security has always been a core pillar of the OPEC Fund’s mission,” said OPEC Fund President Dr. Abdulhamid Alkhalifa. “From crisis response to long-term resilience, we are committed to ensuring that no community is left behind. Partnering with WFP in Syria reflects our shared goal to fight hunger and help countries build stronger and more self-reliant food systems.”
The grant follows a 2023 Memorandum of Understanding between the OPEC Fund and WFP to enhance cooperation on food security and climate adaptation. Since 1981, the OPEC Fund has supported 39 WFP operations worldwide with grants totaling more than US$53 million.
