OFID joins world in mourning Mandela
Today, OFID joins the millions of people in South Africa and around the world mourning the passing of Nelson Mandela.
“Mandela was one of the greatest statesmen of all time,” said OFID Director-General, Suleiman J Al-Herbish, in tribute to the former South African President and human rights activist.
“He was a true man of the people; a born leader whose quiet charisma transcended all human boundaries. He has inspired generations with his vision, optimism and self-belief.
“Mandela may have lost his freedom for 27 years, but he never lost his hope for a free South Africa. This depth of spirit is something we can all learn from.”
Mandela will forever be credited with guiding the peaceful transformation of his native South Africa from a country deeply divided to a nation united in its efforts to achieve social and economic prosperity for its people.
“This process of forgiveness and reconciliation is a model that could be emulated by other nations,” added Mr Al-Herbish.
Above all, Mandela was a humanitarian, especially in his later years. He had a deep affection for all children and young people, and famously once declared: “Poverty is not natural. It is man-made and can be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings.”
OFID celebrates the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela and commiserates with the millions whose lives he touched.
