Although Albania has substantial annual rainfall, less that 20% occurs during the main cultivation period, necessitating the use of irrigated agriculture. As cultivated fields are generally located on low-lying coastal plains that are susceptible to frequent flooding, functioning drainage and flood protection systems are vital. The project will thus entail:
- rehabilitation of five irrigation and drainage schemes covering a total of 6,150 ha and shared among 6,000 farming families in the south;
- repair of drainage systems and flood control mechanisms on a further 30,000 ha;
- rehabilitation of reservoirs.
