Tourism is for the Dominican Republic’s economy, providing income and jobs for thousands of people, especially the urban poor. The country’s water supply and sewerage sector is facing numerous constraints, as untreated sewage is polluting coastal areas and contaminating surface water.
A pilot project will therefore be launched in four large tourist districts with severe wastewater and solid waste management problems: Juan Dolio, Sousa, Cabarate and Puerto Plaza.
- installation of wastewater conveyance and treatment systems;
- construction of pumping and collection stations;
- implementation of monitoring plan of coastal areas to safeguard against contamination of beaches and fresh water reserves; and
- establishment of information and technology dissemination workshops.
