The project provides for an extension of the Tarbela Powerhouse with two hydro-electric generating units of 175 MW each. The plant will thus reach a capacity of 1,050 MW. The expansion of generating capacity in Pakistan is necessary to meet the growing demand of both agriculture and industry.
The project is also expected to increase food production and incomes of poor farmers. During construction, some 21,600 jobs will be created. Permanent employment for operation and maintenance is estimated at 7,000.
