In order to boost agricultural production and provide a safe supply of potable water, the project will build a dam in Taoussa, in the north. The project area extends from the Central Delta region to the Niger border and is populated by around one million people, 70% of whom live under extremely impoverished circumstances. Works will include:
- construction of a dam and 1,460 km3 - capacity reservoir;
- construction of a 130-km paved access road linking the dam to the city of Gao;
- development of 3,500 ha of cultivatable land;
- environmental degradation prevention measures.
