Project activities will be carried out in 19 municipalities in Guatemala’s northern region and will include, among many others:

  • institution-strengthening and capacity building measures for municipalities and community councils;
  • provision of rural development and organizational training to poor communities, especially women and youth;
  • carrying out of rehabilitation works on important infrastructure;
  • construction of some 120 km of new roads;
  • promotion of rural business development, particularly for small and micro-enterprises;
  • strengthening and expansion of rural financial services; and
Also planned is teaching communities to eliminate environmentally-destructive agricultural practices and replace them with sustainable soil and water management technologies. At least 186,000 individuals are expected to benefit from the project.
