The project will support Belize in its efforts to improve waste disposal practices by carrying out activities along the Western Corridor, home to some 40% of the country’s residents.
Open dump sites in Belize City, San Ignacio-Santa Elena and the islands of San Pedro and Caye Caulker will be closed and replaced with new waste transfer and recycling facilities. A sanitary landfill on the Western Highway will be constructed for the final handling of waste. Transport to and from the facility will be greatly improved through the upgrading of the existing access road with an all-weather paved surface. Also planned are measures to strengthen the institutional capacity of Belize’s Solid Waste Management Authority.
