This project is part of a joint initiative by the Organization for International Economic Relations (OiER), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the EGF aimed at enhancing access of rural off-grid communities in developing countries, especially in Africa, to electricity and lighting. Its main objectives are to foster the socio-economic development and improve the living conditions of selected rural off-grid communities in Côte d´Ivoire and Ghana by providing them with 5,000 solar energy units developed by EGF, including 2,500 units in each country; to build local capacity to install and maintain these solar energy units through training of local technicians and creation of a regional maintenance network; and to identify and build the capacity of local firms in each of the targeted countries to assemble these solar energy units at a reduced price.
