Although Ethiopia’s industrial and urban centers are relatively well supplied with modern energy services, rural settlements, which account for around 85% of the 71.3 million-strong population, remain largely unserved. These communities rely instead on traditional biomass sources, a situation that drastically hinders socio-economic development. The project will therefore carry out the following works some 500 km south of Addis Ababa in the towns of Sawala and Key Afer that are located 120 km apart.
- construction of a new substation in Key Afer;
- upgrading of a substation in Sawala;
- installation of a new transmission line between the Key Afer and Sawala substations; and
- construction of a distribution network that will connect 131 towns to the grid.
