The project will construct irrigation schemes in the towns of Chimunda and Paunda, each of which will cover around 1,000 ha. Civil works will include: building supply canals to bring water from the Save River to each scheme; construction of pumping stations; construction of access roads and bridges; procurement of electric pumps, generators and other equipment; establishment of a rural credit scheme for beneficiaries for the first cropping season; provision of inputs and agricultural tools provided. The irrigation works will help reduce smallholders’ dependence on rainfed agriculture. The project will also provide short-term produce storage facilities, which will help reduce spoilage.
