In order to tap into Honduras’ solar energy potential, in Dec 2014 OFID approved a US$25m loan in a syndication for the development and operation of two independent solar voltaic networks: Mecanismos de Energía Renovable S.A. de C.V. (MECER) and Generación Renovable de Honduras S. A. de C.V. (GENERSA) of the Terra Group. The solar networks, each with a generating capacity of up to 25.6 MWp (Megawatt peak), were built in the south of the country. This will, in turn, assist Honduras in its efforts to diversify its energy mix and and reduce its reliance on fossil fuels.
