Although Burkina Faso possesses ample agricultural land, erratic rainfall and frequent drought hinder crop yields and thus threaten food security. In order to enable water resources to be stored more effectively, the project will construct a dam in the Samendeni Valley in western Burkina Faso in Houet Province, home to some 900,000 inhabitants.
The earth dam will be built on the Mohon River and have a storage capacity of 1,050 million m3. Other works include construction of a 2.6 MW hydropower plant and 23 km-long transmission line, as well as diversion structures for irrigating 1,500 ha of land for cultivation. Potable water facilities will also be built in the nearly city of Bobo-Dioulasso.
