The inhabitants of St. Marie Island, 80% of whom live on the poverty line, depend heavily on the tourism, fisheries and agriculture sectors for their livelihoods. Road transport is thus vital for moving produce to marketplaces and shipping ports, and to reach jobs and social services. Much of the network, however, is in poor condition, due in part to the regular occurrence of hurricanes and tropical storms. The project will carry out the following works;
- construction of a 24.5 km-long paved road that will connect to the 52 km-long Ankarena-Ambodiatafana national road, the island’s sole north-south link;
- construction of 900 m of dikes;
- rehabilitation of a dock and ferry channel at Islet Madame Port; and
- repair of a breakwater and dock at Port Barachois.
