Road transport plays a vital role in Tanzania's economic activity through the movement of agricultural produce, inputs and people. However, under-maintenance has led to deterioration of the 85,000-km network.
The project will therefore upgrade seven earth roads in two of Tanzania's poorest regions: Limdi in the southeast and Kigoma in the west. A total of 350-km of earth track will be upgraded and drainage structures installed to prevent flooding. The project will have a substantial socio-economic impact on the areas' two million inhabitants by providing a cheaper, faster link to marketplaces and food deficit regions, as well as to important social services.
