Laos, a mountainous, landlocked, sparsely-populated country, is heavily dependant on road transport. However, only around 14% of the 32,600 km network is paved, with the remainder surfaced in earth or gravel.
Project works will be carried out in three phases in the Attapeu, Borikhamxai, Sayaburi and Vientiane provinces, four rural areas experiencing the most acute economic isolation. Some 223 km of provincial and national roads, all either passing through or connecting to one of the country’s 47 poorest districts, will be reconstructed and upgraded to a gravel or paved surface, depending on the projected traffic levels and the present surface conditions.
