Tajikistan has a hydroelectric power capacity higher than any other country in Central Asia. Government is actively pursuing new interconnection projects with neighboring Afghanistan and Pakistan, to enable it to sell its excess power.
This project will modernize the interconnected transmission systems of Tajikistan and Afghanistan. Works will involve the construction of a 220 kV transmission line to link Golovnaya hydropower plant in the southern region of the country with the Afghanistan border. By strengthening transmission capacity, the project will improve the reliability and cost of electricity in Tajikistan and, at the same time, increase supply in Afghanistan.
