Pakistan's 7,757-km railway network represents the backbone of its transportation system and plays an important role in the country's economy. Due to resource constraints, though, Pakistan Railways has fallen behind in routine and periodic maintenance, leading to deterioration of the entire infrastructure. The project will therefore comprise:
- re-commissioning of locomotives;
- renovation or purchasing of new rolling stock, in particular freight and high capacity oil-tank wagons;
- restoration of deteriorated stretches of track;
- modernization of plant and machinery at various workshops.
