This project will rehabilitate the Pyongbuk Irrigation System, with the dual aim of increasing agricultural production while conserving energy supplies.
A new reservoir with a storage capacity of 275 million m3 will be formed through the construction of a 650 m-long dam on the Samgyo River. Water will be drawn from the reservoir from a separate outlet tower situated upstream, thereby replacing the existing pump-driven system with gravity-fed technology. Some 64 km of new canals will be built and a pilot project introduced on two farm collectives to establish improved techniques and cropping systems. Upon completion, crop yields and electricity savings are expected to increase substantially.
