The project is to rehabilitate and improve facilities at eight outports: Bassein, Moulmein (to be financed by AsDB), Mergui, Taboy, Akyab, Kyaupyu, Sandoway, and Kawthaung (to be financed by OPEC Fund). The outports play an important role in the trasportation sector of Burma as they cover almost the country's entire coastline (about 1,700 miles) and serve areas which are not otherwise linked to the national road networks.
