Rural poverty in India’s State of Orissa is one of the highest in the country owing to underdeveloped irrigation infrastructure. The project therefore aims at improving the productivity of irrigation schemes in four northern river basins and part of the Mahanadi River Delta.
This will be achieved through the development of irrigation and associated infrastructure and carrying out capacity building and institutional strengthening of Water User Associations and at the Department of Water Resources. On completion, the project will significantly improve the performance of irrigation service delivery of 215,000 ha. In turn, this will enhance rural economic growth and help reduce poverty for an estimated 520,000 households.
