The 35 km-long Ole–Kengeja Road is located on Pemba Island and is situated near high-producing agricultural areas. Serving around 88,000 people, it provides villagers with a principal link for moving produce and accessing social services. The stretch has become so eroded that sections are impassable during the rainy season, bringing income-generating activities to a halt.
The project will upgrade the gravel road to asphalt standard and install drainage structures and concrete culverts to insure year-round travel. Environmental protection measures, such as re-vegetating slopes, will also be put into place in the project area to reduce erosion and prevent landslides.
