The project area will encompass seven districts in Louangphrabang and Xaignabouri Provinces in northern Laos, two of the poorest regions in the country. Works will include the following:
- improvement of some 367 km of Route 4 from Xiang Ngeun in the north to Nakha on the Thailand border
- replacement/repair of culverts
- installation of drainage works
- construction of a bridge spanning the Mekong River and connecting the two provinces
- rehabilitation of around 100km of rural access roads
- implmentation of road maintenance schemes
- resettlement of households affected by project works
