The project will upgrade some 293 km of national highways in Sri Lanka's Central, North Western and South Western regions. The roads have been prioritized because of their poor condition, traffic volumes and development potential. Low-lying road sections will be raised to prevent flooding, while others will be widened where needed. Also envisaged is the installation of drainage systems and repair or replacement of highway bridges and culverts.
The newly paved roads will enhance the well-being of numerous communities by lowering transport costs and boosting access to social services and jobs.
