The main objective of the project is to distribute efficiently and at a minimum cost the electricity generated by power stations located in the Mahaweli Basin to the principal load centers in and around Colombo. A secondary objective is to enable the existing system to function at acceptable levels of reliability, voltage control and energy losses.
