As most villages in the mountainous regions of landlocked Nepal are inaccessible by roads, the development of domestic and international airports is crucial to the country’s growth of trade and tourism. This project will upgrade the Bhairahawa Airport to international standards in order to improve tourist flow to the Lumbini Heritage Site, a prominent UNESCO World Heritage Site located about 22 km from the airport. Works will comprise the following:
- construction of a new runway
- construction of an international terminal building and control tower
- installation of modern communication and navigational equipment
- improvement of tourism infrastructure at the Lumbini Heritage Site
