The majority of irrigation infrastructure in the mountainous Lai Chau Province are small-scale, temporary works built on sloped terrain that are easily damaged by flooding. As a result, crop yields are low, placing hardship on the Province’s 311,000-strong population. The project will improve irrigation infrastructure among 12 of the poorest communes in Lai Chau Province’s five districts. This will include: construction of 14 small-scale irrigation systems to serve around 2,433 ha; construction of a 400 m-long earth-fill dam; reclamation of 1,193 ha of unused land to develop terraces for rice cultivation; and resettlement of 230 households affected by the civil works. At least 66,000 inhabitants are expected to benefit from the project.
