The Bukhara Province in Southwest Uzbekistan is populated by approximately 1.4 million, most of whom live in rural areas. Agriculture is the largest consumer of water at 80%, with the Amu-Bakhara irrigation system getting its water intake from the Amudarya River, one of the most important water management complexes in the country. Part of the system, the Kuyu Mazar pumping station, is in extremely poor condition.
The project will therefore construct a new modern, efficient pumping station capable of serving 30,000 ha, benefiting around 40,000 people. After completion, the increased reliability and efficiency of the system will do much to raise farm productivity and consequently help reduce rural poverty.
