Kirundo Province is populated by some 600,000 people, most of whom rely on agriculture for both subsistence and livelihoods. Poverty levels in the province are high, due in part to the poor state of its road network.
The project will help address this situation by constructing a 37 km-long, all-weather, paved road linking the city of Kirundo to Gasenyi and the Rwandan border. Drainage works will be installed to prevent flooding. Some 80 km of feeder roads will also be upgraded, and improvement works carried out on social infrastructure. The newly refurbished road will help reduce poverty and foster trade opportunities both within and outside the country.
