The project was aimed at improving the capacity of African water utilities to ensure the safety of water supplies and safeguard public health with increased resilience and ability to prepare for extreme weather events. It was expected to directly benefit the water utilities and their staff, and ultimately at least 100,000 water customers in the 5 targeted countries. The project has implemented a number of activities including: A. Producing four reports documenting the key stakeholders in the drinking water management and highlighting the management status of WSPs and drinking water quality in four countries as follows: 1. Burkina Faso - DWQ Management and WSP Implementation 2. Ghana - DWQ Management and WSP Implementation. 3. Kenya - DWQ Management and WSP Implementation. 4. Senegal - DWQ Management and WSP Implementation. B. Revising the standard 5-day WSP training to include approaches that address climate resilience. The resulting training is now called Climate Resilient WSP training. The main aim of this training is to equip participants with the Climate Resilient Water Safety Planning approach and tools in order to enable them develop and implement Water Safety Plans in their respective utilities. The training also demonstrates how the outcomes from the Flood and Drought Management Tools project (http://fdmt.iwlearn.org/) can be applied by water utilities to support their planning and resilience to climate change. The training has so far been carried out as follows: 1. The first training was for KIWASCO and it happened from 25 February – 1 March 2019 at The Vic Hotel, Kisumu, Kenya (see Annex 10: KIWASCO CR - WSP Training Report). Stakeholders from other government agencies and utilities also joined the training. They included: County Government of Kisumu, Ahero Catholic Water Project, Gulf Water and Sewerage Company, Sondu Miriu Right Bank Water Users Association, KIWASCO – Nyanas, and the Kenya—Integrated Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Project (KIWASH).The full list of participants is included in the report. This particular training was partly supported by funds from KIWASH. 2. The second training was carried out for GWCL from 18-22 March 2019 at the Pempamsie Hotel, Central Region, Cape Coast. Stakeholders from other government agencies including the Hydrological services Division, Water Resources Organisation and Municipal Assembly were also trained. For details on the training, see Annex 11: GWCL CR - WSP Training Report. 3. The third training took place from 08 – 12 April 2019 for ONEA at the Bravia Hotel in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. A complete report on the details of the training can be seen in Annex 12: ONEA CR - WSP Training Report. 4. The fourth training took place for SDE from 15 – 19 April 2019 at Hôtel VDN (Good Rade), in Dakar, Sénégal. A total of 25 participants were trained: 23 from SDE and 2 from SOMAGEP in Mali. Details of the training are contained in Annex 13: SDE CR - WSP Training Report. 5. An additional training was carried out in Mali for SOMAGEP from 5th to 9th August 2019 at the Azalai Hotel in Bamako. The training report is under preparation. This training was organised in collaboration with WaterNet. WaterNet is supporting a number of activities at SOMAGEP including the development and implementation of WSP.
