An estimated 2.2 million people were forcibly displaced during the Balkan war. While one million still live abroad, the majority have sought to return to their homeland. This project will assist a priority government initiative to facilitate the resettlement of 200,000 refugees and displaced persons through the rebuilding of some 50,000 homes. OFID’s loan will co-finance the reconstruction of approximately 700 housing units. In some cases, the building work will be carried out by the beneficiaries, who will receive subsidies to help pay for technical support or contracted work, if required. The completed homes will provide accommodation for around 3,000 people and aid their reintegration into their home communities.
