The construction of the Hirgigo Thermal Power Plant, located some 10 km from the city of Massawa on the Red Sea coast, originally began in 1997. Shortly before the plant was fully commissioned, however, it was extensively damaged as a result of conflict in the region.
This supplementary loan was extended to retroactively cofinance the repair works that were completed in December 2001 necessary to bring the plant back into operation. The refurbished plant is supplying households with a reliable, economical source of energy, and has the installed capacity to handle future electricity requirements.
