In the early 1990s, street lighting was virtually non-existent in the Greater Banjul Area (GBA), and Government initiated its First Street Lighting Project, which covered a small section of the capital. This encouraged tourism and the establishment of other businesses, and subsequently led to the formulation of a second project to encompass the Banjul-Serrekunda Highway and the main access roads in Kanifing, the largest municipality within the GBA.
Altogether, lighting will be installed along some 29 km of highways and streets. Upon completion, the project will boost safety and security on the Banjul streets, particularly in industrial and tourist areas.
