Poor grain storage has resulted in tremendous financial losses; the Egyptian Government thus plans on building 50 grain silos in 21 of the country’s governorates. Phase I, which was co-financed by OFID, constructed 20 metal silos. Phase II entails:
- construction of three metal silos, each with a storage capacity of at least 30,000 tons, on sites selected on the basis of their proximity to main roads and cultivation areas and the amount of grain currently being lost
- equipping of complexes with truck and railway receiving pits, delivery portals and scales, as well as tunnels and modern conveyance systems
