The program will focus on three administrative regions of Maradi, Tahoua and Tillaberi, predominantly rural areas that account for over one-half of Niger’s total population. The occurrence of droughts and floods has worsened food insecurity and poverty among the regions’ farmers and pastoral herders. The project aims at supporting Government’s efforts to mitigate the impact of these crises. This will be done by carrying activities that will include, among others:
- distribution of seeds;
- development of small-scale irrigation schemes;
- strengthening of irrigated rice-production systems along the Niger River Valley; and,
- construction of 170 km of feeder roads and 72 modern water points.
