Hurricane Mitch hit Central America end October 1998, causing great destruction in many countries including Guatemala. The northern Atlantic departments and the suburbs of the capital city of Guatemala were hit by strong winds and torrential rain affecting some 50,000 people. Communications between the capital and the rest of the affected area were cut due to extensive damage to road networks. Basic infrastructure such as power lines, water supply and sanitation services have been seriously damaged. The OPEC Fund's assistance was used for the provision of essential supplies to 4,500 needy families for three months.
