The project aimed at improving sanitation in a low-lying district of Zanzibar town, where poor drainage and frequent flooding have led to repeated outbreaks of cholera, malaria and other water-borne diseases. Project activities should involve the construction of a new drainage system with double the existing capacity to remove storm water from the area and discharge it into the sea. This improved the environmental sanitation in the district and briought the level of hygien-related diseases under control.
