Mongolia suffered heavily from its second severe Dzud, a combination of severe widespread drought followed by unusually cold temperatures, in a row. The first Dzud struck Mongolia during 1999 - 2000, in which 2.4 million livestock or about 10% of the total head of livestock, perished and 450,000 herders, or a fifth of the total population, were affected. Another disaster has hit the country during the winter of 2000-2001.
