A massive earthquake struck wester Colombia, on January 25, 1999, measuring 6 on the Richter Scale. The earthquake devastated large areas of the country's coffee-growing belt, claiming hundreds of lives and leaving many thousands homeless. The OPEC Fund's humanitarian assistance helped procure shelter and relief supplies for the victims of the earthquake, through the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA).
