The grant was to help victims of the violent cyclone which struck the south-eastern coastal belt of Bangladesh on May 19, 1997. The cyclone caused severe flooding and devastation along 200 km between the port city of Chittagong and Teknaf. The death toll reached 300 people, with some 500 people missing and many thousands injured and homeless.
