Although the coverage of electrical services in the Dominican Republic is relatively high, its delivery is unreliable owing to frequent power outages. The project will therefore carry out works in the Santiago, Cristóbal and Santa Domingo provinces, benefiting an estimated 790,000 people.
Activities will include the rehabilitation and upgrading of distribution networks; the installation of meters; and the replacement of obsolete equipment. A community outreach component is also planned to define clear rules between communities and the electricity distribution companies. Funds will be provided for seminars and meetings with local leaders, communities and institutions on a wide range of issues ranging from fraud reduction (relating to illegal electrical connections) and safety, to legal rights and energy conservation.
