The project will rehabilitate irrigation systems in Cuba’s Eastern Zone, in the provinces of Camagüey, Las Tunas, Holguín, Granma, Santiago de Cuba and Guantánamo, over a total area of 3,360 ha of irrigable land. This will include:

  • replacement of diesel-driven equipment with electrically-driven and low pressure irrigation systems;
  • rehabilitation of reservoirs, pumping stations, distribution pipes and canals; and
  • purchase of farming equipment such as tractors, plows and graders.
The new systems will be capable of raising food production to some two million tons per annum, boosting food security while simultaneously reducing Cuba’s reliance on imported produce.
