The project is designed to connect the country's eastern and western electrical grids in order to reduce the western zone's dependence on oil imports for electricity installation of a 94.4-mile long 230 kV transmission line from the Tounji Station in the eastern zone across the Jamouna River to the Ashourdi Station in the west. Apart from the foreign exchange savings, the interconnection will also promote efficient usage of electricity as the excess generating capacity of the east will be used to meet electricity shortfalls in the west.
