The project is an integrated irrigation/ environmental initiative that seeks to boost agricultural productivity while protecting the plain’s threatened wetlands.
Phase I completed the construction of three dams and related irrigation schemes over an area of some 19,000 ha. Phase II will divert water from the Zamanti River via a 10,700 m tunnel to allow for the irrigation of a further 9,700 ha of farmland.
This should lead to increased agricultural production, especially at a commercial level, and ultimately raise incomes and living standards among the area’s 100,000 inhabitants.
