Although heavily dependent on its water transport system, marine infrastructure is deficient across much of the country, placing remote, rural communities at a particular disadvantage. The project will thus carry out the following works:
- setting up of a Community Water Transport Fund to provide transport subsidies to impoverished communities;
- restoration of dilapidated infrastructure at 40 selected maritime transport facilities; and
- provision of community extension services in isolated areas to enable the population to take advantage of potential rural development opportunities that will open up as a result of the improved transport services.
