This project aims to raise living standards among rural smallholders in the Central and Eastern development regions by intensifying agricultural production on 34,000 ha of irrigated land. A range of sub-projects will be carried out to include the following:

  • improvement of irrigation infrastructure, including diversion structures, drainage systems, canals and flood protection facilities;
  • provision of training to farmers in using high-yielding crops and providing improved varieties of crops; and
  • institutional strengthening to build the capacities of national-level institutions responsible for agriculture and water resources.
On completion, the project will help improve the living conditions of over 270,000 low-income people through increased incomes, enhanced food security and better employment opportunities.
