The 512 km-long Bogotá–Buenaventura Corridor provides an important connection from Colombia’s central highlands to its main port in Buenaventura. As the road passes through the Western Andes Mountain range, travel is slow and often unsafe. Government has initiated a three-phase project to overcome these constraints by constructing a double uni-directional tunnel in the Calarcá– Cajamarca section of the Corridor. Phase I, which is presently underway, is drilling an 8.7 km, 4.5 m in diameter exploratory tunnel. Phase II will include:

  • carrying out of excavation works;
  • construction of an 8.8 km-long tunnel;
  • installation of a ventilation system, safety and monitoring equipment and lighting;
  • construction of dual carriageway access roads connecting Calarcá and Cajamarca to the tunnel;
  • supervisory services; and
  • the establishment of an environmental mitigation plan.
