The grant was extended to support an Associate Membership Scheme of Centers of Excellence in the South. The scheme benefitted some 120 associates. Its total estimated cost was US$1.3 million. The project started in 1993, invitations were extended to reputable centers in the developing world to present their research activities and propose ways of cooperating with other similar centers, to exchange views and coordinate their efforts for innovative work. 60 candidates were selected from the three continents - Asia, Africa and Latin America.
